Mr Castro himself has been in the public eye for some time. He was twice elected to the presidency of Cuba through the ballot in the 1950s and 1960s but was never given dictatorial powers. That changed under his brother Fidel, who took power in 2009. His power over the island has risen dramatically since then, with a national daily newspaper, for example, now being called “The People’s Friend”; a new constitution written by his supporters gives him almost dictatorial powers. Meanwhile, the Cuban authorities have launched a series of purges, including of his political supporters and those who dare to criticise him.
