DALLAS — Two of the world’s wealthiest men and their daughter are joining forces. And they’re pledging $50 million to UC Davis to build an agricultural research center that will study the use of plant genes and other genetic traits in crops that will be beneficial in the world.

George Lucas, who is chairman of Lucasfilm, and his daughter Katherine joined their friend and benefactor, the late real-estate developer David H. Murdock, in pledging the money on Thursday at the Grand Hyatt and then on Friday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

“The Murdock/Lucas research center will bring together world-class experts who are doing cutting-edge research in the fields of plant genetics and plant molecular biology,” the two Hollywood financier-entrepreneurs said in a news release announcing the effort. “UC researchers
