The Grammys are considering adding an Afrobeats category for the first time.
Last night, Grammy officials announced that they were considering adding another genre to the already-elaborate, multi-track, 24/7/365-format: Afrobeats, which they intend to call “a new music genre in the middle of the African-American music industry.”
The Grammy committee is now soliciting input for the new genre from musicians, producers, musicians, fans of African-American music, and others, on what they think should be included, the committee’s chairwoman told Variety.

In an email obtained by Variety, the Grammy committee’s chief, Bob Boilen, wrote that “given the history of music in Africa, and the diversity of Afrobeats, we have begun exploring its potential for inclusion” in the popular music genre.
“[T]o begin with, we want to consider a genre that has been overlooked in the history of Grammy awards,” the Grammy committee chair, Bruce Broughton, added in the email. “To that end, we are looking at a genre that was not included in the history of the Grammys.”
Broughton wrote that the Grammy committee has already heard from musicians, producers, fans, African-American musicians, and others who all expressed their interest and concerns regarding the genre.
