Banana thrown at Brazilian players in soccer friendly in Paris
French soccer icon Ludo said a banana was thrown at him in the stands and players including David Beckham threw their own bananas as well.
In the second half of the game Ludo was hit in the face by a hard banana thrown at him in the stands and, in celebration of the goal, two of the Portuguese players threw their own bananas at him.
Ludo, who has been at the forefront of the campaign for international soccer players to play in the Confederations Cup, described the scene as “weird,” but praised the Portuguese team for showing “humility and courage.”
“I just saw a banana thrown at my head as I was celebrating a goal,” Ludo said. “These guys should be ashamed of themselves because that banana had no place in sport and just as people throw garbage on the street, these guys throw bananas on the pitch.
“The Portuguese team showed great courage and humility. They did not know that I am Brazilian. We had a long chat, but I was never insulting. I told them that I am Brazilian and I am used to receiving bananas thrown by people.
“In my country everyone knows that if you throw a banana at someone, it’s coming back. I had no choice but to laugh. I was hit with one, and they were throwing all kinds of bananas. We had a good time and we had fun. I didn’t expect these two guys to throw away their bananas.”
