Nicki Minaj’s swipe at Grammys for changing song category pulls Latto into Twitter feud
Nicole “Nicki Minaj” Minaj is a star, but she is also a woman.
She is a rapper. She is a reality TV star. And she is a Grammy-winning artist who has become one of music’s most outspoken figures in a very tumultuous year.
And on the heels of her Grammy-winning performance with The Roots on Tuesday, Minaj — whose real name is Najee Ali — took to Twitter to slam the Recording Academy over the change last month to the category of best new artist — which she has performed in over the past 10 years.
The Academy released a statement saying the change was made in order “to better reflect today’s music landscape with its ever-changing genres and the impact music makes on people’s lives, as well as to maintain the integrity of the category and honor the most groundbreaking achievements in music.”
“There will be no changes to any of my awards from 2018,” Minaj tweeted on Thursday. “I’ve been rocking it on my way up and just won the most prestigious award, so thank you for that.”

Minaj, whose real name is Najee Ali, has been a vocal advocate for music fans to be able to access original music, and to not take the Grammys too seriously, which she has done regularly on Twitter.
In May, while on tour in Europe, Minaj retweeted an image of herself wearing what appeared to be a fake Grammy, and wrote “this shit is all I got time for.”
