Rafael Nadal says he and his family are ‘very well’ after birth of first child
As he heads back to Paris for his week-long holiday, Rafael Nadal gave the French daily “Le Monde” the thumbs-up as he celebrated his first baby boy.
The 33-year-old, who is also due to play in the Paris semi-final, said he was’very well’, as he made his first public appearance in six months.
Rafael Nadal had told “France Inter” earlier this week that he was’sad’ to have to return to Rio with his father and brother for the men’s final.
Speaking to the French daily ahead of his departure for Rio, he replied: ‘Yes, we were sad to leave’.
The Spaniard’s wife Marta, 34, returned to her native Brazil on Monday, having arrived in Rio on Monday morning after meeting the city’s mayor and other officials to discuss the future of the national team.
The couple are already expecting their first child, following a summer romance that led to the birth of their daughter Alize and the first grandchild: son Axel.

The tennis star is currently leading in the four-man Paris semi-finals, having not dropped a single match this week.
Rafael, 33, will play against either Gilles Simon or Tommy Robredo in the last eight of the men’s final.
The semi-finals will follow Sunday’s men’s final (22:05 BST), when Federer will face Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.
Federer has won 18 of his last 27 matches on the red clay, including their last meeting in October.
A total of seven players have won their four matches on clay in the current season.
