LIZ CHESTER — As the Trump administration rages over immigration, Liz Cheney has gone on the record to offer a warning that the GOP risks turning into the party of a rising young minority demographic.

The former Republican vice president told USA TODAY on Tuesday that the GOP is facing a “serious challenge” to its conservative identity.

“There’s a new conservative party growing out of the Republican Party,” Cheney said. “Many in the Republican Party do not understand that they are alienating half of their base by not talking about the way that we need to go forward.”

The rise of the new conservative party is more menacing to the GOP than the rise of a new Democratic majority, Cheney added.

“This is not a political party. This is a political movement,” she said. “Many of them do not understand the power of ideas, the power of persuasion and the power of the marketplace. They see politics as only a business. They fear that they would lose to Hillary Clinton and the Democrats. … That would be a disaster.”

“The American people really want their party to be the party of ideas, the party of change,” she said.

As the election draws closer, the rising tide of new voters — young voters and minorities — has challenged Republicans on the left and the right.

Trump’s candidacy has also brought a fresh challenge from Democratic voters who see him as divisive, reckless and unfit for the highest office in the land.

“I think the biggest challenge for the Republican Party today is how do you relate with a nation that’s more economically diversified and has more people of color?” Cheney said.

“The challenge is not only how we talk about immigration. The challenge is how do we speak to diverse America?”
