The Most Boring Musician Ever

Phil Collins’ daughter Lily Collins didn’t want a ‘free pass’ in industry: ‘It was out of the question’

He has a history of drug and sexual abuse. His most recent arrest was for public drunkenness. He is on the sex offenders register and has been subject to a string of restraining orders against him.

He is said to not have had a relationship with his estranged brother, Nick, for two years; on the contrary, he has been obsessed with him since he met him while performing at the Young Vic.

But, after a tumultuous start to his career, as rock critics and fans called him many things – including “the most boring musician ever” – he has since found success.

A week ago, he released his first album, which features collaborations with a number of artists, including Jay-Z and Elton John, and has become a cult hit.

The album is called No Jacket Required, and is his first mainstream record released since his most recent arrest, for public drunkenness, on 17 January. The following month, he was found guilty by a jury of five charges including common assault of two women, one of whom is his ex-girlfriend.

He is due to be sentenced on 22 November in Westminster magistrates’ court.
